"KNIT FOR KIDS"
The United Methodist Women (UMW) are participating in "KNIT FOR KIDS", a volunteer movement carried out through Guideposts magazine. In March 1966, a story about knitting sweaters for refugee children appeared, prompting hundreds of readers to request patterns. Sweaters began to stream in. Ten years later more than 300,000 sweaters have been distributed to needy children in America and in places like Romania, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Kosovo, to name a few, creating a caring bond between people from all walks of life who knit or crochet the sweaters and the thousands of children in need who receive their gifts. Thirty hand-made sweaters have been contributed to Guidepost’s “Knit for Kids” program by UMW members. The sweaters go around the world through organizations such as World Vision & Feed the Children. Over 300,000 sweaters have been donated in the past 10 years. For more information, patterns or yarn, contact Ruth Truman, or go to the website www.knitforkids.org.
